A Wide Berth
August 15, 2026
Proverbs 26:4-5 reads like a contradiction until you see it's a framework rather than a formula: sometimes silence answers the fool, sometimes a measured word does. Criticism has arrived as anonymous letters and now as posts, but the discipline stays the same — you don't have to read every word written about you. The wide berth isn't retreat; it's a strategy that guards your calling and the people who actually matter.

Two Voices
August 15, 2026
Isaiah 6:5-7 shows what happens after Isaiah collapses in guilt: an angel flies to *him* with a coal from the altar and tells him his sin is taken away. Notice the direction—Isaiah doesn't crawl toward God, grace crosses the room to him, with no lecture and no list. You don't get clean and then come to God; you come to God and He cleans you, and the question that shapes your whole year isn't whether you fall but whether you know the way back to verse 7.

You Can't Serve Both
August 15, 2026
Matthew 6:24 says no one can serve two masters—like two people calling your name at once, you have to pick one. Money isn't evil, but it can turn into a sneaky boss that whispers "get more, keep more, spend it all on yourself." Jesus reminds us that serving God and serving stuff pull in opposite directions, and you were designed for something better than chasing things that break: to love God, serve people, and shine your light.

I Will Dwell
Psalm 23:5-6 closes the Stay Close series with a table set in full view of enemies who never disappear. The cup overflows, goodness and love pursue from behind rather than lead from ahead, and the final word is dwell — not visit. After thirteen weeks in James, the invitation is to make staying close a permanent address instead of a season.

Planted
Psalm 92:12-15 describes the righteous flourishing like trees—but the word that carries it is *planted*. A tree that gets moved every few months survives but never grows deep roots, and the same is true of spiritual tourists who show up when it's convenient. Your future is directly connected to who has the closest seats in your life, so the question is whether you're planted somewhere or just near it.

Through the Valley
Psalm 23:4 turns on one of the smallest words in the language: through. The valley is a passage, not a permanent address — it has an entrance and an exit. David never denies the danger; his fearlessness rests entirely on the presence of a shepherd carrying a rod to fight and a staff to guide. And a shadow requires light, which means the darkness is never total.

Every Day
Acts 2:44-47 rests on two easy-to-miss words: *every day*. The early church didn't wait for goosebumps—they met daily, ate together with glad hearts, and let God handle the growing while their only job was showing up. What forms you isn't the mountaintop moment but the unremarkable Tuesday, and something is already forming you daily—the only question is whether you picked it.

He Refreshes My Soul
Psalm 23:1-3 offers a complete theology in a single line: if the Lord is your shepherd, you lack nothing. The verb matters — he makes us lie down, because rest is not something we choose naturally. Sheep will not drink from turbulent water, so the shepherd finds still places. Soul-level refreshment comes from outside ourselves, and God delights when we actually receive the gift.

Personal, Not Private
Acts 2:42-45 describes a church that lived like a family, not a weekly meeting—people close enough to notice when someone quietly started to drift. Your faith is personal, but it was never meant to be private, and you need a few people who will notice before you check out and nobody sees.

A Multitude of Sins
James 5:19-20 names the stakes without softening them: death, and a multitude of sins covered. Every awkward conversation and inconvenient reach toward a wandering friend matters on an eternal scale. At salvation something transfers — sin moves onto Christ and his righteousness moves onto us, complete and permanent. The seconds are limited, and the question is whether we will use the time we have.

The Starting Line
Acts 2:41-43 moves straight from the mountaintop—3,000 people saved in a day—to verse 42, where those same people went home and rearranged their ordinary weeks around Jesus. As summer ends, the question isn't what you felt but who you're becoming, because your best moment with God was never the finish line. It was the starting line.

The Turn
James 5:19-20 describes turning someone from the error of their way, but that turning happens through proximity rather than pressure. Jesus went to people rather than waiting for them; Philip climbed into the chariot instead of shouting from the roadside. The invitation is to stop rehearsing what to say and start planning how to be present, trusting God to do the actual turning.

Bring Them Back
James 5:19-20 places the work of rescue on whoever is close enough to see someone going under. Not a pastor, not a professional — anyone already in the boat. Rescue is rarely elegant; it costs comfort, stability, and plans. The problem for most of us is not cruelty but passivity, and the call is to leave the deck and get into the water.
