Next to Him

August 19, 2026

Nehemiah 3 reads like a roll call, and the phrase "next to him" appears twenty-two times while Nehemiah's own name is absent. The devotional draws out the leadership in that disappearance: the chapter where the leader vanishes is the chapter where the work gets done. We are invited to stop trying to build the whole wall, hire for intensity over intellect, and simply build the section in front of us alongside the person next to us.

Matthew 5:14-16 closes the series where Isaiah's story has been heading all week: you are the light of the world, sent right back into the same building you walk through every Monday. Nothing about the bricks changes—what changes is why you're there. Most light-hiding at school isn't dramatic; it's just going quiet when the table turns on someone. Your campus already has somebody assigned to it who's seen God, been honest, and been cleaned by grace. Go look in a mirror.

Your Father Already Knows

August 19, 2026

Matthew 6:31-32 is a tiny picture of walking into the kitchen thirsty and Mom already handing you a glass of water. A lot of people chase after stuff—what will we eat, drink, wear—spinning around like a puppy chasing its tail, never catching anything. But Jesus said you don't have to live like that, because your Father already knows exactly what you need before you ask. He's not surprised by your first day; He's already gone ahead of you. You can breathe.

What’s Heaven Like

Revelation 21:4 describes Heaven as a place where all pain, death, and sorrow will be wiped away, offering eternal peace and fulfillment in God's presence. Heaven is not just a distant hope, but a promised reality, where God's love will fully heal and restore. Like Corrie ten Boom, we can face life's trials with the assurance that the best is yet to come.

What is Hell Like

Revelation 20:14-15 describes Hell as a place of eternal separation from God, where there is both physical and spiritual suffering. The most agonizing aspect of Hell is the complete absence of God's presence, leaving only regret and sorrow. Yet, Jesus offers us a way to avoid this fate through His sacrifice, calling us to choose eternal life with Him.

Is Hell Real?

Matthew 25:46 and 2 Thessalonians 1:9 emphasize the reality of Hell as a place of eternal punishment for those who reject God's grace, highlighting the seriousness of our choices. While Hell is real, so is God’s offer of eternal life through Jesus, urging us to accept His gift of salvation and share this truth with others.

How Christians Respond To Death

1 Corinthians 15:55-57 reminds us that, through Jesus, Christians have victory over death. While we grieve loss, we do so with hope, knowing that death is not the end but a transition to eternal life with Christ.

What Happens After We Die?

John 11:25-26 teaches that for believers, death is a transition to eternal life with God, while rejecting Christ leads to eternal separation. Now is the time to accept His gift of salvation and live with the assurance of eternal life.

Reading With A Different Lens

Romans 12:2 reminds us to be transformed by renewing our minds through Scripture. Instead of seeing the world through the lens of culture, we are called to view life through God's Word, which exposes the flaws of worldly thinking and guides us to live in alignment with God's truth. Let Scripture reshape your perspective and priorities today.

Keep Going

1 Corinthians 15:58 encourages us to stand firm and continue in our work for the Lord, reminding us that no act of love or service is ever in vain. Like Van Gogh, whose work was unrecognized in his lifetime, we may not always see the immediate impact of our efforts, but God is using them in ways we cannot yet see. Trust in His faithfulness and keep going.

He Is So Close

Acts 17:28 and Matthew 28:20 remind us that God is as close to us as our very breath, constantly present and sustaining us. The name of God, YHWH, echoes in every breath we take, symbolizing His intimate nearness and reminding us that He is always with us, guiding and comforting us in every moment of life.

Preparation Time

Nehemiah 1:4 and Philippians 4:6 show us that before tackling any major challenge, we must begin with prayer, allowing God to work in us before He works through us. Nehemiah’s success in rebuilding Jerusalem’s walls was rooted in months of prayerful preparation, reminding us that true strength and clarity come from waiting on God and seeking His guidance.
