Genesis 41:37–46 “The plan seemed good to Pharaoh and to all his officials. So Pharaoh asked them, ‘Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the spirit of God?’ Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, ‘Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one so discerning and wise as you. You shall be in charge of my palace, and all my people are to submit to your orders. Only with respect to the throne will I be greater than you.’ So Pharaoh said to Joseph, ‘I hereby put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt.’”

Think

In one chapter, Joseph goes from prisoner to prime minister. No campaign. No warning. No connections. Just a moment where preparation meets providence, and God flips the script.

It starts with Pharaoh’s disturbing dreams. No one in Egypt can interpret them. The usual magicians and mystics come up short. And that’s when the cupbearer finally remembers. Joseph is summoned from the dungeon, quickly cleaned up, and brought before the most powerful man in the known world. And within minutes, he interprets the dream, proposes a strategy, and earns Pharaoh’s full trust. It’s the kind of moment we love in movies—the dramatic reversal, the underdog victory. But it’s important to remember the years that came before this moment. Joseph didn’t wake up favored. He woke up forgotten. He had no idea what the day would bring. All he did was stay ready.

We often want God to flip the script without allowing him to write the full story. We want sudden promotion without long preparation. But Joseph’s rise wasn’t random. It was rooted in years of surrender, suffering, and steady faithfulness. He was ready for the palace because he was faithful in the pit.

Sometimes we assume that our current season disqualifies us from greater things. But God doesn’t waste pain. What others used to break you, God uses to build you. The pit taught Joseph humility. The prison refined his leadership. And in Pharaoh’s court, those hidden skills were brought to light.

Think about how different this moment would’ve been if Joseph had given up back in the dungeon. If he had stopped interpreting dreams. If he had hardened his heart or given in to bitterness. Pharaoh never would’ve heard wisdom. Egypt never would’ve been saved. The famine would have devastated Joseph’s family. But instead, Joseph stayed faithful—and because of that, when God opened the door, he was ready to walk through it.

The phrase “flip the script” usually means a total reversal. But in God’s hands, it doesn’t just mean a role change. It means redemption. It means that what others meant for evil is repurposed for good. The very things meant to limit you become the lessons that launch you.

There’s a Japanese art form called kintsugi, where broken pottery is repaired with gold. The cracks aren’t hidden. They’re highlighted. The fractures become part of the design. That’s what God does with our stories. He doesn’t erase the pit, the betrayal, or the loss. He redeems it. He pours grace into the fractures and makes something more beautiful than if the pieces had never broken.

So many people walk through betrayal and assume the best is behind them. But Joseph’s story reminds us that God often saves the best for last. You may be in a hidden season now. But if you’re willing to keep showing up, keep trusting, and keep growing, God can flip the script in a moment you never expected. And when he does, it won’t just be about your promotion. It will be about his purpose. Because Joseph’s rise wasn’t for his own glory. It was for the rescue of others. The elevation was always connected to the mission. His suffering gave him compassion. His wisdom protected a nation. His pain prepared him to steward influence with humility.

You might not be called to save a country, but you are called to live ready. When God opens the next door, what will he find in you? Bitterness or readiness? Frustration or faithfulness? Because the pit you’re in today could be the very soil God uses to grow the future you can’t yet see.

Apply

What situation in your life feels like a dead end or delay? Today, ask God to help you see it as preparation instead of punishment. Don’t chase platforms, build character. Stay faithful with what’s in your hands. Serve well, lead humbly, and trust that when God flips the script, you’ll be ready for the next chapter.

Pray

God, thank you for being the kind of author who writes redemption into the hardest parts of my story. Forgive me when I assume you’ve forgotten me or think I have nothing left to offer. Prepare me in private so I can be faithful in public. When the door opens, let me be ready. Use every delay as training ground for your purpose in my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
