Storm Ready

February 26, 2022

Ephesians 5:15-16, “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.”

“…Because the days are evil.”

As Christ-followers, those five words should encourage us to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. We can do that by adding our fourth priority to our “signs” acrostic:

S — Shift our focus to Jesus and His church

I — Inspire us to pray for others

G — Give us hope for the future

N — Navigate the world around us wisely

S —

You’re in the middle of the ocean, at total peace, leisurely floating in the vast expanse of water, watching the sun sink behind the horizon. As night falls, it grows darker. Clouds cover the sky, blocking out any possible light from the moon and stars. Suddenly, you can’t even see your hand in front of your face. The wind picks up, and the waves grow larger — you’re at the mercy of the elements. How quickly circumstances can change!

Life is similar to this scenario. One minute everything is in order, and it’s smooth sailing. Then, BOOM! The waves of the world are crashing all around, and you can barely keep your head above water. How do we navigate life’s uncertainties and trials?

Today’s verse is key to navigating this ocean called “life.” Paul advises us to not merely give attention to achieving big goals and dreams but to pay careful attention to the details of our daily walk with Christ. We are to walk in wisdom, which far supersedes head knowledge. The wise understand that God reigns supreme and that even though we live in a fallen and fallible world headed for destruction, we live for Him. We navigate the world by “making the most of every opportunity.” Rather than pursuing earthly things, we use them and our time here to do what’s most important — glorify God and advance the gospel.

Storms are unavoidable and strike when least expected, so be prepared. Jesus is your ultimate internal navigation system — He wants to guide your steps, thoughts, and decisions every step of the way. And He will always lead you upward; He’s your true north!

If you are in the midst of a storm right now, apply the wisdom of God’s Word to steady your life. Seek Christ-centered people to walk alongside you and help you weather the winds and rain. If your life now is smooth sailing, prepare for future storms by evaluating your priorities, spending time in the Word, praying regularly, and developing friendships with wise people who love Jesus and live in obedience to His commands.

Heavenly Father, Thank You for being my True North. Help me walk in Your wisdom and make the most out of every opportunity for Your glory. Guide me to be storm ready through wise living and wise decisions. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
