Billy Graham once shared a touching story from his visit to a young boy in Korea who had been severely injured by a shell blast. Despite the devastating news that his spine was irreparably damaged, leaving him unable to move and destined to spend his life lying on his stomach, the boy’s spirit was undaunted. He bravely told Dr. Graham, “It was worth it if it will keep America free!” This profound declaration brings home a brutal truth we often hear but might not fully appreciate: Freedom comes at a cost.

We toss around the phrase “Freedom isn’t free,” especially as Memorial Day approaches, but how deeply do we consider what that means? When we pause to honor those who have sacrificed their lives for our country, it’s vital to really reflect on what our freedom has cost.

Since the Revolutionary War, starting with the Battle of Lexington and Concord, approximately 1,354,664 Americans have given their lives in service to our country. That’s a staggering number, each representing an individual who left behind a life and loved ones to protect the liberties we often take for granted.

This Memorial Day, let’s genuinely be thankful for these men and women who sacrificed all for our freedom. Remember the freedoms you enjoy every day and think about the price paid to secure them. As we reflect, let’s also hold in our thoughts the families and loved ones of those who made the ultimate sacrifice, hoping they find some comfort and peace. Let’s make a promise to never forget these sacrifices and to always appreciate the profound honor and courage with which our service members have served our nation.
