Love Doesn’t Boast

February 15, 2024
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

Think

Napoleon was known for his arrogance and boastfulness. He advocated the sanctity of the home and the obligation of public worship—for others. Of himself he said, “I am not a man like other men. The laws of morality do not apply to me.”

In these verses, we see the complete opposite; love is broken into two key traits: endurance and humility. It's not a fair-weather sentiment; it's the kind that stands the test, goes the extra mile, and refuses to give up. Love isn't about pride; it's about being the first to say, "I am sorry, I was wrong." These qualities aren't abstract; they're solid, tangible commitments requiring our wholehearted dedication.

Real love is all about putting others first. In the phrase, "it does not boast," we see it as the kind of unassuming love without a hint of ego. When you truly love someone, their well-being becomes more important than your needs and desires. Love doesn't need a grand entrance; it doesn't seek validation or parade its achievements. It quietly works behind the scenes, ensuring the best for others.

In 1 Corinthians 13, we see that true love stands apart—it's selfless and humble and requires a commitment beyond mere words.

Apply

Read John 13:34-35 and see how Jesus demonstrated ultimate love. How do his actions inspire you to demonstrate selfless love today? Make an intentional effort to be the first to apologize in a situation of disagreement or misunderstanding.

Pray

Heavenly Father, I need your help to exhibit the kind of love required for this world. Teach me to love others with endurance, to persevere through challenges and difficulties, and to remain steady in my commitment to those around us. Fill me with your Holy Spirit and empower me to love as you have loved me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
