Psalm 8:3-5, “When I consider Your heavens, the work of your fingers...what is mankind that You are mindful of them, human beings that You care for them? You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor.”If you’ve ever looked up at the sky on a clear night, you know what it’s like to be in awe of that vast expanse of God’s creation. Over a billion trillion stars in the universe, and yet even the small fraction that we can see is beyond our comprehension. When David was coming to the end of his life, he reflected on this — God’s divine design. After years of ruling the kingdom of Israel and now facing his own deteriorating health, it was clear that the “greatness” of humanity was only a flickering flame compared to God’s brilliant light. And yet, God cares for humanity. He cherishes us, has crowned us with glory and honor, and has given us dominion and authority over the earth. It’s staggering. We may never fully understand it, but we know how we are to respond: with awe, wonder, and gratitude.
