Matthew 6:1 “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.”

Think

We live in an age where everything can be shared. You finish a good deed, and within minutes it can be a post, a reel, a story. You say something meaningful, and it’s quoted in a caption. Visibility is easy—and affirmation is addictive. We all love the sound of applause, whether it’s loud or subtle, public or private. But Jesus gives a strong and gentle warning in Matthew 6:1: Be careful. Why? Because even good things can be done for the wrong reasons. Even spiritual practices—giving, praying, serving—can be twisted into platforms for approval. And when goodness is driven by the hope of recognition, it becomes a performance instead of a practice. It loses its purity. Its depth. Its power. And eventually, it starts to exhaust you.

Jesus isn’t against being seen. He’s after your motive. He’s inviting you into a deeper life—a hidden life—where your acts of goodness are rooted in love, not applause. He’s reminding us that the reward of goodness isn’t the praise of people. It’s the presence of God. And when we learn to live that way, something changes.

You become free. Free from the pressure to impress. Free from the constant need for feedback. Free from comparison. Free from wondering, “Was that noticed? Did that matter?” Because you already know—it mattered to the only One whose approval actually counts. You begin to move from “Will this be seen?” to “Is this pleasing to God?”

Goodness without recognition is where the fruit of the Spirit becomes real. It’s doing what’s right because it’s right, not because it’s strategic. It’s staying faithful to the small, repetitive, behind-the-scenes acts of love and integrity. It’s trusting that God sees what no one else claps for—and that His reward is worth more than any temporary attention.

Jesus lived this perfectly. He often told people not to publicize what He had done. He went away from the crowds. He slipped out of the spotlight. He served without needing to post about it. And His goodness never wavered—even when the crowd turned on Him, even when the cheers turned to accusations, even when the disciples fell asleep and walked away. That’s the kind of goodness the Spirit wants to grow in you—not a kind that fluctuates based on how it’s received, but one that flows from who you are in Christ. A goodness that serves when it’s seen and when it’s unseen. That loves people who will never return the favor. That stays steady even when you feel overlooked, underappreciated, or misunderstood.

Maybe you’re in a season like that right now. You’re doing the work. Staying faithful. Raising kids, leading quietly, being honest, holding the line—and no one seems to notice. You’re wondering if it’s making a difference. You’re tempted to quit or to shift just enough to get attention. But this is where the harvest begins. Hidden obedience is where fruit takes root. The slow faithfulness. The quiet sacrifice. The decisions no one else sees but God. That’s the soil where goodness grows deep.

There’s a kind of spiritual maturity that gets formed when you keep choosing integrity in silence. When you learn to live for the approval of One. When the applause of heaven starts to matter more than the opinions of earth. That’s not weakness—it’s strength. That’s not naivety—it’s maturity. And let’s be honest—this kind of goodness doesn’t always “feel good.” It can feel lonely. It can feel like a dead end. But Scripture promises that at the proper time, you will reap a harvest if you do not give up. (Galatians 6:9) The seeds you’re planting in secret are doing far more than you know.

So today, don’t stop doing good just because no one sees. Don’t adjust your integrity to get a reaction. Don’t compromise your calling to feel validated. Keep showing up. Keep doing what’s right. Keep planting, watering, and trusting that the God who sees in secret will reward you openly—in His way, in His time, and for His glory.

Apply

Do one good thing today on purpose—and keep it private. Don’t tell anyone. Don’t post it. Don’t drop hints. Let it be a secret between you and God. Let that act remind you that goodness is worth pursuing even when no one claps—because He sees, and He’s smiling.

Pray

Jesus, you did good when no one noticed—and you loved people even when it cost you everything. Teach me to live like that. Free me from the need to be seen. Grow in me a quiet, steady goodness that reflects your heart. Let me find joy in doing what’s right, even when no one claps. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
