Leviticus 20:26 “You are to be holy to me because I, the Lord, am holy, and I have set you apart from the nations to be my own.”

Think

Ever felt like the odd one out in a room? Maybe you were the only person not drinking at a party, or the only one who didn’t laugh at the inappropriate joke. That feeling—that tiny social pinch of being different—is part of what it means to live as someone “set apart.”

In Leviticus, God calls Israel to be distinct from the surrounding nations. Not just to be morally superior, but to reflect his character to the world. The whole point wasn’t isolation—it was demonstration. God didn’t call his people out so they could hide from the world; he called them out so they could show the world who he is.

Holiness is a calling, not a costume. It’s not about putting on a spiritual front to look impressive. It’s about living with integrity when no one’s watching. And sometimes, that means sticking out in a culture that prizes blending in. We feel the tension when we decline gossip, set boundaries, forgive freely, or choose humility over self-promotion. Holiness puts us at odds with the status quo—but never apart from God’s mission.

Jesus told his followers they were salt and light. Salt doesn’t do much sitting in the shaker. Light isn’t helpful under a bowl. The power of being “set apart” comes when we’re willing to stay engaged—with clarity, kindness, and courage. Holiness doesn’t mean withdrawing from difficult people or dark places. It means showing up differently in them. We live in the same world, but with a different allegiance.

The Hebrew root word for “holy” (qadosh) carries the sense of “marked off” or “dedicated.” Imagine a reserved sign on a table at your favorite restaurant. It looks just like the others, but it’s claimed. That’s what God has done with you. You might not look all that different on the outside—but your life now carries a sign that says, “Reserved for his purpose.”

You were never called to fit in. You were called to follow Jesus. That road is narrow, yes—but it’s also full of light, joy, and purpose. Don’t mistake being uncomfortable for being in the wrong place. Sometimes the tension is the confirmation. Holiness isn’t always loud—but it’s always noticeable.

Apply

Choose one “normal” moment today to live differently. It might be offering to pray for a coworker instead of just saying “I’m sorry.” Maybe it’s turning off a show that crosses lines or speaking up kindly when a conversation turns toxic. Do the holy thing—even if it’s awkward.

Pray

Father, help me live set apart without being standoffish. Give me courage to be different—not for pride, but for purpose. When it’s uncomfortable, remind me that you’re with me. Use my life to reflect your love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
