Is College Supposed to Feel This Unclear? Choosing with Intention, Not Panic
Graduation is supposed to feel like a finish line. Instead, for many seniors, it feels like standing at a crossroads while everyone is watching. Friends announce their plans. Questions pile up. "Where are you going?" starts to feel heavier than it should.
If college feels unclear right now, you're not behind. You're normal. One of the healthiest things you can do in this season is slow down just enough to make a thoughtful decision, not just a fast one.
Why College Decisions Feel So Overwhelming
The pressure usually comes from good places. You want certainty. You want relief. You want to feel like you're moving forward. But urgency can make it easy to confuse speed with progress. Many students rush into decisions simply to escape the discomfort of not knowing. College, however, isn't just a destination — it's an environment that will shape your habits, your confidence, and your direction. That makes the decision worth thinking through.
Shift the Question from "Where Am I Going?" to "Who Am I Becoming?"
Instead of asking only where you're going, ask who you're becoming. A few helpful questions: Will this environment help me grow, not just earn credits? Will I have mentors and relationships, not just classes? Is there structure that helps me stay focused and disciplined? Will I be challenged to lead and take responsibility? A degree matters — but the person you become while earning it matters more.
It's Okay to Not Have a Perfect Plan
You're not expected to have your entire future mapped out at 18. Many students discover clarity through experience, not certainty. Growth often comes from being in the right environment, not from making the perfect choice on paper. Feeling unsure doesn't mean you're failing — it means you're stepping into adulthood.
A Thoughtful Decision Builds Confidence
You don't need to rush to prove you're ready. Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans (Proverbs 16:3). Choosing with intention builds confidence and sets the tone for how you'll make decisions long after graduation. The goal isn't to have everything figured out — it's to take the next step wisely. And wisdom rarely comes from rushing.
