Stay on the Wall
August 22, 2026
Nehemiah 6:1-9 records four invitations to leave the wall for the plains of Ono, and four times Nehemiah answers, "I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down." When the fifth attempt comes as a public, unsealed letter of lies, he calls the lie a lie and prays four words: "Now strengthen my hands." The devotional urges us to stay on the wall, to P.R.A.Y. rather than become P.R.E.Y., and to let the finished work answer the critics.

Why Stare at Us?
August 22, 2026
Acts 3:11-13 hands Peter the biggest half-second of his life—a healed man jumping around, a crowd sprinting over, all eyes on him—and his first words are "why are you staring at us?" Boldness that only shows up when it costs you something is half the test; the other half is what you do when boldness starts working. The same man who folded in the courtyard because it was all about protecting himself now couldn't be stopped, because it wasn't about him at all. If it's about you, everything rides on you—but you were never the point. You're the one pointing.

Let Your Light Shine
August 22, 2026
Matthew 5:16 ties the whole week together: when you're not busy worrying, what do you have room to do instead? Shine. Worry uses up all your attention spinning round and round about yourself, but when you hand it to God, you suddenly have room to notice the kid next to you who needs a friend. A worried heart hides its light; a trusting heart shines bright. Your light isn't really about you—it points people straight to God.

Three Stages of Relapse
1 Corinthians 10:12 warns of the perils of overconfidence in resisting temptation, outlining the necessity of vigilance. Relapse is a gradual process, not a single event, beginning with emotional disengagement and progressing through mental struggles before manifesting physically. This insight shifts the focus from merely avoiding negative behaviors to addressing their underlying causes. It emphasizes proactive strategies, like establishing a relapse prevention plan and leaning on community support, to effectively manage and overcome the stages of relapse.

Triggers
James 1:14-15 warns of the dangers of succumbing to personal temptations, likening it to being lured by one's own desires. Sodom
Genesis 13:12 observes Lot's decision to settle near Sodom, symbolizing the perilous allure of sin. This narrative underscores the gradual entrapment by evil when one entertains temptation, cautioning against even the smallest compromise with sin, as it can lead to complete moral downfall. We are reminded to decisively avoid sin and temptation, as inching closer can inevitably pull us into a cycle of regret and repetition, just as it did Lot.

Mousetraps
Hebrews 12:16 cautions us to avoid short-sighted decisions like Esau, who sacrificed his birthright for immediate gratification. This principle is exemplified in both mundane situations, like a mouse trapped by the lure of cheese, and profound life choices involving addiction or temptation. It urges us to resist fleeting pleasures in favor of what aligns with our deeper values and God’s best for us.
