Junk in the Trunk

October 8, 2026

Proverbs 4:23 calls us to guard our heart above all else, because everything we do flows from it. Many of us carry baggage from family of origin, temperament, and unhealthy conflict styles so long that we forget it is there, until it crashes into our relationships. Guarding the heart means opening the trunk honestly and inviting God to sort through what we have been carrying.

Will You Give Me a Drink?

October 8, 2026

John 4:7-10 teaches us through Jesus’ conversation with the Samaritan woman that no person is too distant, overlooked, or outside the boundaries of His love. We can follow His example by crossing barriers, starting genuine conversations, and listening well as we trust Jesus to open the door for something deeper.

Who Am I?

October 8, 2026

Exodus 3:11-12 teaches us that when we feel too small or afraid for what is ahead, what matters most is not how strong we are but that God is with us. We can be brave and take the next step because we never have to face big things alone.

They Follow Me

John 10:27 pulls the whole week together in one short sentence with three parts: his sheep listen, he knows them, and they follow. Listening is something you choose—getting quiet, opening the Bible; being known is all him, since he knew you completely before you ever listened; and following means actually going where he leads, which is always worth it because a good shepherd only leads to the very best places.

I Am the Least

Judges 6:14-16 has Gideon hand God a résumé—weakest clan, least in his family, two levels of nobody—and God doesn't argue with a single item on the list. He never says "you're selling yourself short"; the list was probably accurate. His answer isn't "you're enough," it's "I will be with you"—like a couch that doesn't get lighter when someone grabs the other end, but "we're moving this" becomes true. God didn't shrink the assignment to match Gideon's confidence; only the company changed. Your weakness doesn't disqualify you—it creates room for his strength.

One More Chance

Acts 5:7-10 reveals God's mercy hidden inside a hard story. Three hours after her husband's death, Sapphira is handed a lifeline—one honest answer could have changed everything—but she grabs the rehearsed script instead. God still sends lifelines: a friend's question, a verse that won't leave us alone, a pang of conscience. The tragedy isn't the judgment; it's the chance offered and refused.

One Flock, One Shepherd

John 10:16 says Jesus has sheep in other pens too, and he's bringing them all into one flock—not just people who look like you or live near you, but kids and grown-ups all over the world, some waking up while you're going to sleep. So when you feel left out or alone, remember you belong to the biggest, most loving flock there's ever been, all following the same shepherd home.

Mighty Warrior

Judges 6:11-14 finds Gideon crouched in a winepress—a pit with no wind—threshing wheat badly on purpose so the raiders won't spot him, and that's the exact moment God calls him "mighty warrior." God isn't being sarcastic; he's speaking to a version of Gideon that doesn't exist yet, then getting to work making it true. And his answer to Gideon's honest complaint is "go in the strength you have," because the qualification was never Gideon's strength—it's "am I not sending you?"

No Winking at Sin

Acts 5:5-6 is jarring—Ananias falls dead with no second chance—because it confronts our comfortable image of a God who winks at sin. But the God of Acts is the same holy God from Genesis to Revelation, and his holiness is not a wall but a gate whose code is honesty. Sin always requires a payment, which is exactly why grace is so astonishing. The invitation is to approach him with nothing hidden.

Too Loud to Hear

Psalm 1:1-2 is like trying to tell your friend something important while the TV blasts and the dog barks—it's not that you're quiet, it's that everything else is too loud. Our lives fill up with the noise of busyness and screens until we never slow down to notice God. But you get to decide what your mind soaks up, and making room isn't sitting there waiting for a voice—it's turning off the noise so there's space to think about a verse, and finding God was close the whole time.

Then I Will Hear

2 Chronicles 7:13-15 has God open on the best week of Solomon's life by naming the dry seasons ahead—not *if* the heavens shut, but *when*—so the flat stretch you're in doesn't surprise him. His promise is aimed at "my people," and it asks for a posture, not a program: humble yourself, pray, seek his face (want him, not just what he can arrange), and turn. And notice the order—he hears, then forgives, then heals what you can see last, so dry never meant distant.

What God Sees

Acts 5:3-4 confronts the illusion that we can hide from God. Ananias lied to Peter, but Peter names the deeper truth: he lied to God, who sees behind every mask and closed door. What we cover, God uncovers; what we uncover, God covers. The offering God actually wants is not our money or our resume, but our honesty.

What the Sky Is Saying

Romans 1:19-20 says you don't need words on a page to know a painter made a painting—you just know, and the world is like that. God left his fingerprints all over creation: a sunset, a snowflake, the way your knee heals itself. When something amazes you outside, that's your heart hearing God say, "I made this—and I made you too."
