You’re a Rolls

Psalm 139:13–16 "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be."

I was in London speaking several years ago. Lisa and I had a free afternoon, so we walked down a street called Savile Row. If you are not familiar with Savile Row, it is the address where the finest tailors in the world do business. We are talking bespoke suits that cost ten, twenty, thirty thousand dollars. We met a woman who was the understudy for one of the top tailors on the row. She walked us through the process, how she measured royalty and celebrities and people whose net worth had more zeros than I could count. She showed us the fabrics, the stitching, the handwork that went into a single jacket. Every cut was intentional. Every thread was placed with purpose. I stood there thinking, that is just crazy. Unbelievable craftsmanship.

But here is what hit me as we walked away. The finest suit on Savile Row, the one with the hand-stitched lapels and the imported Italian lining, is nothing compared to what God has already put on you.

Before you can date well, before you can evaluate another person, before you can build a relationship that honors God, you have to settle something. You have to know what you are worth. And your worth is not determined by your salary, your social media following, your body type, or how many people swipe right. Your worth was determined before you took your first breath.

The psalmist writes, "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well."

Think about that language. Knit together. That is not assembly line work. That is not mass production. God did not stamp you out of a mold. He knit you. Thread by thread. Detail by detail. The way your mind processes information. The way your laugh sounds. The things that move you to tears. All of it, intentional.

I have said many times that every person is a Rolls Royce. You are not a used rental car. You are not some economy model that rolled off the lot with missing features. You are a Rolls. God made you in his image, and when he finished, he did not say, "good enough." He said, "very good."

But here is where so many of us go sideways. We walk around with a punishing loop playing in our heads. Not attractive enough. Not smart enough. Not successful enough. Not enough. And that loop drowns out what God has already declared over us.

I remember when I was a kid, I had a mole in the middle of my head. It used to bother me. Then my ears. One of my ears looks very much like a Vulcan. I used to think people were staring at it. But here is what I have noticed. I think people think about me more than they actually do. And I bet you do the same thing. We are so self-centered that we assume the world is analyzing our flaws when, in reality, most people are too busy worrying about their own.

Verse 16 says, "Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be." Before you were born, God had already written your story. Not a rough draft. Not a first attempt. A finished work. Every day accounted for. Every detail planned.

This is why identity has to come before intimacy. If you do not know who you are in Christ, you will look for your identity in a relationship. And that is a weight no human being was designed to carry. You will expect another person to complete you, to validate you, to fill the gap that only God can fill. And when they cannot do it – because they cannot – you will blame them for something that was never their responsibility.

Here is the deal. The tailors on Savile Row spend weeks on a single garment. They measure twice, cut once, and every stitch reflects the skill of the craftsman. But God spent more time on you than any tailor has ever spent on any suit. He formed you in secret. He wove you together with precision and purpose. And the result is not a garment you wear. It is who you are.

So before you go looking for a Rolls, look in the mirror. You already are one. The question is whether you believe it. Because confidence that comes from knowing your Creator made you on purpose, for a purpose, is the kind of confidence that does not need another person to prop it up. It stands on its own. And it attracts the right kind of person for the right kind of reasons.

The suits on Savile Row will eventually wear out. The fabric will thin. The stitching will fray. But what God has made in you? That lasts forever.

Settle your worth – Before you evaluate anyone else, settle this: you are God’s original masterwork. Write Psalm 139:14 on a card and read it every morning this week until you believe it.

God, thank you for making me on purpose. Forgive me for the times I have looked for my worth in the wrong places. I know I am fearfully and wonderfully made, but some days I do not feel it. Help me to see myself the way you see me. Root my identity in you alone so that I enter every relationship from a place of wholeness, not need. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
