You Can't Serve Both

Matthew 6:24 "No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money."

Think

Try something silly for a second. Imagine two people calling your name at the exact same time, pulling you in two different directions. One says, "Come here!" The other says, "No, come here!" You cannot go both ways at once. You have to pick one.

Jesus said your heart is a lot like that. He said no one can serve two masters. You cannot follow two bosses who want opposite things. Sooner or later, you have to choose who you are really going to listen to.

He gave a specific example. He said you cannot serve both God and money. Now, money is not evil by itself. We use it to buy food and clothes and to help people. But money can turn into a sneaky little boss. It starts whispering, "Get more. Keep more. Spend it all on yourself." And if you listen to that voice all the time, it becomes your master.

We have spent all week learning how to serve like Jesus. Going the extra mile. Giving with open hands. Serving in secret. Storing up treasure in heaven. And here at the end, Jesus reminds us why it all matters. Serving God and serving stuff pull in opposite directions. You get to choose which one you follow.

Choosing God does not mean you can never have anything nice. It means God gets to be first. It means when the money voice says "keep it all for yourself," you can say, "No thanks, I am going to share and serve instead."

You were designed for a purpose. And that purpose is not to chase after stuff that breaks. It is to love God, serve people, and shine your light so bright that everyone around you looks up and gives glory to your Father in heaven. That is the best life there is. Go live it.

Choose God first – Today, pick one moment when you put God and other people ahead of getting something for yourself. Share instead of keeping. Give instead of grabbing. Serve instead of chasing stuff.

Pray

God, I want you to be first in my heart. Help me to not chase after stuff that breaks. Help me love you and serve people the way Jesus did. Thank you for making me on purpose. Let my light shine for you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
