You Are the Light

August 9, 2026

Read

Matthew 5:14-16 "You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

Think

Have you ever been outside when it got really, really dark? Maybe camping, or during a storm when the power went out. It is a little scary. You cannot see where you are going. You bump into things. Your feet feel around for the next step.

Then someone clicks on a flashlight. And everything changes. Suddenly you can see the path. You can see faces. You can see that the scary shape in the corner was just a backpack.

One small light can fill a whole dark room.

This weekend we learned something amazing. Jesus looked at his followers and said, "You are the light of the world." He was not talking about a flashlight or a lamp. He was talking about you. When you love people and help people and do good things, it is like a light turning on in a dark room. People notice. It makes the whole place feel warmer and safer.

But here is the part that matters most. Jesus did not say to shine your light so people will think you are awesome. He said to shine so that people will look up and think God is awesome. When you help your little brother or share your snack or say a kind word, you are not showing off. You are pointing people to God.

You know what? A candle does not have to try hard to shine. It just does what a candle does. And when you follow Jesus, being kind and helpful starts to feel that natural too. It becomes who you are.

God made you on purpose. He gave you a light to shine. This whole week we are going to learn how Jesus wants us to serve other people. And it all starts here: your good works are a light, and that light points straight to God.

So go be a flashlight in someone's dark day. You never know how much they needed it.

Apply

Shine on purpose – Today, do one kind thing for someone without being asked. Help clean up, share something, or cheer someone up. When they notice, you can tell them you are just trying to be like Jesus.

Pray

God, thank you for making me on purpose. Help me be a light today. When I do kind things, help people see how good and how loving you are. I want to shine for you. In Jesus' name. Amen.
