Who Am I?

Exodus 3:11-12 “But Moses said to God, ‘Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?’ And God said, ‘I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.’”
Think
Have you ever been picked for a something that felt way too big for you?
Imagine a girl named Maya. One morning her teacher asks her to read the announcements over the loudspeaker. The whole school will hear her voice. Every classroom. Every teacher. Even the principal!
Maya's stomach feels full of jumping frogs. “Why me?” she thinks. “Lots of kids would be better at this.”
Moses felt a lot like Maya. Only his job was much, much bigger.
God had just told Moses to go to Pharaoh. Pharaoh was the king of Egypt. He was the most powerful person in the whole land. And God wanted Moses to walk right up to him and say, “Let God's people go.”
Moses said, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh?” In other words, “God, I'm nobody! Pick someone else!”
Now listen to how God answered. God did not say, “Moses, you're awesome. You can do it!” He did not list all the reasons Moses was strong or smart. God said something even better.
“I will be with you.”
That was the answer. The big question was not “Who is Moses?” The big question was “Who is going with Moses?” And the answer was God.
Think about walking through a busy parking lot with a grown-up. Cars are backing up. Horns are honking. It feels big and a little scary. But when you hold your mom's or dad's hand, you feel safe. You are still the same size. The parking lot is still busy. The difference is the person holding your hand.
That is how it works with God. You might feel small. The job might feel big. But when God is with you, you do not have to be the biggest or the bravest. You just have to go with him.
God also gave Moses a promise. One day Moses would bring the people right back to this same mountain to worship. God was saying, “This is going to work out. I've got this.”
So, the next time you feel too small for something, remember Moses. Instead of asking, “Who am I?” try asking, “Who is with me?” The answer is always God.
Apply
Remember who's with you – Is something coming up that makes you nervous? Maybe a test, a game, or a new place? Write “God is with me” on a sticky note and put it where you will see it. Read it every time you feel too small.
Pray
God, sometimes I feel too small for the things in front of me. Thank you for promising to be with me. Help me be brave because you are right beside me. In Jesus' name. Amen.
