Where Your Treasure Is

Matthew 6:19-21 "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

Think

Think about your very favorite thing you own. Maybe a special toy, a game, a stuffed animal, or a bike. Got it in your mind?

Now think about this. Every single toy you have ever owned will one day break, wear out, or get lost. It is true. Even your favorite thing. Toys get scratched. Games stop working. Bikes get rusty. Jesus said that stuff on earth gets eaten by moths, ruined by rust, or taken by robbers.

That is a little sad to think about. But Jesus was not trying to make us sad. He was trying to help us aim our hearts at the right target.

Jesus said instead of storing up treasure here, store up treasure in heaven. What does that even mean? You cannot mail a toy to heaven. But you can do things that last forever. When you love people, help people, and serve people, you are building treasure that never breaks and never gets stolen. Kindness lasts forever. Love lasts forever. The good you do for others is treasure that moths can never touch.

Then Jesus said the sentence that ties it all together: where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. That means whatever you care about most is where your heart goes. If all you care about is stuff, your heart gets stuck on stuff. But if you care about loving God and serving people, your heart follows right along.

Toys are fun. There is nothing wrong with liking your bike. But you were designed for something bigger than a pile of stuff that breaks. You were designed to build treasure in heaven by serving like Jesus.

So aim your heart high today. Every kind word, every helping hand, every time you serve someone in Jesus' name, you are stacking up treasure in a place where nothing ever breaks. Store up the kind of treasure that lasts forever.

Apply

Store up what lasts – Instead of spending all your time on your stuff today, spend some of it on a person. Play with someone, help someone, or encourage someone. That is treasure that will never break.

Pray

God, help me care about the things that last forever. Toys are fun, but people matter more. Point my heart toward loving you and serving others. I want to store up treasure in heaven. In Jesus' name. Amen.
