We Cannot Help Speaking

Acts 4:18-20 "Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John replied, 'Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges! As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.'"

Somewhere in this passage a lot of us start to check out, because arrest and threats from a religious council feel very far from a Tuesday at your school.

So let me put the cost where you will actually feel it.

There is a seat at a table that used to have you in it.

You changed something. Maybe you stopped going to a certain house on the weekends. Maybe you stopped laughing at the group chat when it turned into a group of people taking apart somebody who is not in it. Maybe you just got quiet when things went a direction you were not okay with anymore.

And nobody announced anything. Nobody sat you down. You just started getting invited less. The plans got made and you found out about them after. And it is not dramatic, it is not persecution, but it is a real loss, and it stings in a way that is hard to explain to anybody.

That is the modern version of Acts 4. It costs something to follow Jesus out loud.

Peter and John get arrested and held overnight. Then they get the command. “Stop talking about Jesus.” Not stop believing in him. Nobody in that room cared what they privately thought. Believe whatever you want. Just stop saying it out loud.

That is almost exactly the deal your culture offers you. Keep your faith. Nobody is trying to take it. Just keep it where nobody has to see it.

And Peter says, “We cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.”

Notice how he says no. He does not say, “We will not stop, we are stronger than you.” He says that they cannot help it. It has become a physical impossibility. Something happened to them, and now it is coming out of them the way steam comes out of a pot.

Here is what makes that possible, and it is not toughness.

“What we have seen and heard.”

You cannot be talked out of what happened to you. Somebody can beat you in an argument about the Bible. Nobody can beat you in an argument about your own life. When you know what God has done in your family, in your head at two in the morning, in the thing you were sure would break you, you are holding something that a smarter person cannot take from you.

Which raises the honest question. Have you seen and heard anything?

For some of you the silence is not fear at all. It is that there is nothing to report. Church is something you attend. God is a topic. And you cannot help not speaking, because there is nothing pressing to get out.

That is worth saying to God today instead of faking your way through another week.

And for those of you who do have something, hear this. Revival is not singing louder on Wednesday. Anybody can do that. Wednesday night in a dark room with music playing is the easiest place in the world to be a Christian.

Revival is living differently on Thursday. In a hallway. In a locker room. In the seat where somebody notices that you are not the same and does not entirely like it.

Peter and John went back to that same city and kept talking. They lost their safety and kept their mouths open.

The seat you lost is not the end of your story. It might be the first real thing following Jesus has ever cost you.

Count the cost honestly – Name one thing following Jesus has actually cost you, or one thing it might cost you this year. Tell God you are willing, then tell one trusted person so you are not carrying it by yourself.

Pray

God, I want to be able to say I cannot help speaking about what I have seen and heard. Show me clearly what you have already done in my life so I have something real to say. And when following you costs me something, help me stay put instead of quietly backing off. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
