The True Vine

John 15:1-2 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.”

Think

Have you ever seen a grapevine, or a plant like a tomato or a pumpkin growing in a garden? There is one thick main stem coming up out of the ground, and then all these branches and leaves spreading out from it. Every grape, every tomato, every leaf is connected back to that one main stem.

In this part of the Bible, Jesus points to a picture just like that. He says, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.” He is telling us something huge about how life with God works. He is the vine, the strong main stem, and God the Father is the one who cares for the whole garden.

So who are the branches? That is where we come in, and we will get to that tomorrow. For today, focus on the vine. Everything good that grows on a plant comes from the vine. The branch cannot make grapes on its own. The life flows up from the vine and out into the branches.

Here is the bridge to you. Jesus is saying that he is where your real life comes from. Not your video games. Not your grades. Not even your family, as much as they love you. The deepest, truest life inside you flows from being connected to Jesus.

The verse also mentions that the gardener prunes the healthy branches. Pruning means carefully trimming a plant so it grows even better. It sounds a little scary, but a good gardener only prunes because he wants more fruit, not less. We will come back to that idea this week.

For now, hold onto this. Jesus is the true vine. He is the source. And you were made to be connected to him, so his life can flow into you and grow something beautiful.

Find the vine – Today, whenever you eat a fruit or a vegetable, remember it grew because it was connected to a plant. Let it remind you to stay connected to Jesus, your true vine.

Pray

Jesus, thank you for being the true vine, the place my real life comes from. Help me remember that everything good in me flows from being connected to you. Keep me close. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
