Acts 5:7-9 "About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. Peter asked her, 'Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?' 'Yes,' she said, 'that is the price.' Peter said to her, “How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also."

Think

Sapphira walks in three hours later and gets one question. Not an accusation. A question. “Tell me, is this the price you got for the land?”

She is handed a door. All she has to say is, “No, actually there was more, and we wanted people to think we gave all of it.” One sentence and this ends differently.

And she says, “Yes, that is the price.”

Luke told us in verse 1 that Ananias did this with his wife’s full knowledge. They talked about it. This was a plan. Two people sat down and agreed on the story they were going to tell the church about themselves.

Everybody has two versions of their life available at all times.

There is the one people scroll past. And there is the camera roll it came from.

Nobody posts the eleven that did not work. Nobody posts the version where your eyes are closed and your friend is mid-sentence and the light is bad. You pick one, you crop it, you fix the color a little, and that is the one that goes out. And everyone doing the scrolling compares their camera roll to your one good picture and quietly concludes that everybody else has it more together than they do.

That is not evil. That is just how a feed works.

It becomes something else when you start doing it with your walk with God.

Because there is a spiritual version of the same thing, and students are very good at it. The story about camp that you tell every time it comes up. The one deep answer you have ready for small group. Knowing exactly which parts of the weekend to include and which to leave out. A finsta with a different name where a different person lives.

Ananias and Sapphira posted the picture. They just did it with money and a church instead of a phone.

And here is the part that should slow all of us down. Peter says they conspired to test the Spirit of the Lord.

They thought the audience was the church. The audience was God.

That is the thing about the curated version. It only works on people who cannot see the rest. And there is one person who has already seen the whole camera roll. He has seen the thing you deleted. He has seen the conversation you have never repeated. He was in the room.

So the performance is not even effective. It is only fooling the people who were never the point.

Now hear the good part, because there is one.

God is not standing over the gap between your image and your reality, taking notes and getting angrier. He is the only one in your life who has already seen the entire thing and has not walked away. Jesus did not die for the edited version of you. He died for the actual one.

Which means the exhausting part of your faith, the part where you keep an image up, was never required. You can stop.

Sapphira was three hours behind her husband, walking into a room with a story she had already agreed to. She had one chance to tell the truth and she took the story instead.

You get a chance today, and yours does not require anybody to die. It just requires you to stop selling a version of yourself and let one person see what is actually there.

Apply

Drop one filter – Pick one person you trust, a leader, a parent, or a friend who is actually walking with God, and tell them one true thing about where you are that they would not know from watching you. One sentence is enough to start.

Pray

Jesus, you have seen all of me and you did not leave. I have been working hard to keep up a version of myself that is not real, and I am tired. Help me let somebody see the truth this week. Thank you that you love the actual me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
