Scripture Before Screens

Romans 12:1-2 "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."

Here is a challenge. Before you read another word of this devotional, answer this question honestly: what was the first thing you looked at on a screen today? Was it a text message? A news headline? A social media notification? A score update? Or was it Scripture?

I already know the answer for most of you, because I know the answer for myself. The phone sits on the nightstand. The alarm goes off. And before your feet hit the floor, your thumb is already swiping. You have consumed more information in the first ninety seconds of your day than your grandparents consumed in a week. And none of it was from the Word of God.

I challenged my congregation to do what I called a "sin-ventory." Not an inventory. A sin-ventory. I asked people to look at the last seven posts they had made on social media. The last seven people they had communicated with digitally. The last seven songs they had listened to. The last seven shows they had watched. When you line those sevens up next to each other, they paint a picture of where your heart really is. Not where you say it is. Not where you wish it was. Where it actually is.

Then I asked them to do a "win-ventory." The opposite list. Where are the wins? Where is God showing up? Where are you seeing fruit? When you put the sin-ventory and the win-ventory side by side, patterns emerge. And patterns reveal trajectories. If the sin-ventory is long and the win-ventory is short, you are on a trajectory that leads away from God. If the win-ventory is growing and the sin-ventory is shrinking, you are being transformed. Not just informed. Transformed.

That distinction matters. Paul’s command in Romans 12 is radical. "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." Notice what Paul does not say. He does not say, "Be informed by the renewing of your mind." He says be transformed. There is a difference between those two words that will change how you approach every screen in your life. Information changes what you know. Transformation changes who you are. You can be the most informed person in the room and still be conformed to the world. You can read every article, follow every thought leader, listen to every podcast, and still be exactly who you were before you started. Because information without transformation is just noise.

Technology can inform, but it cannot transform. Only the Lord Jesus can transform a heart. No algorithm will renew your mind. No feed will reshape your desires. No app will produce the fruit of the Spirit. Those things come from a source that is infinitely older and infinitely more powerful than any platform ever built. They come from the living Word of God applied to a surrendered life by the power of the Holy Spirit. That is transformation. Everything else is information.

Think about the three pigs we have been wrestling with all week. Pride says, "It is about me." Envy says, "It should be me." Lust says, "I want it now." Pride climbs up. Envy pulls down. Lust takes in. Three different pigs, three different strategies, but the same pigsty. And the antidote for each one is the opposite spirit. Instead of pride, choose humility. Instead of envy, choose contentment. Instead of lust, choose self-control. These are not willpower moves. They are the fruit of a mind being renewed by the Spirit of God through the Word of God.

Here is a simple filter for every post, every comment, every piece of content you put into the digital world. Four questions. Is it true? Is it helpful? Is it loving? Does it glorify Christ? If the answer to any of those four is no, do not post it. Do not share it. Do not comment on it. The simplicity of that filter is the power. You do not need a complicated system. You need four questions and the willingness to be honest with your answers. And here is another one: before you hit send, edit your post and count the personal pronouns. How many times does "I" or "me" or "my" appear? If the post is mostly about you, rethink it. The pronoun count is a mirror all by itself.

But the filter is only part of it. The bigger shift is what comes first. Begin every morning with Scripture before screens. Before you check your texts, check in with God. Before you scroll the feed, read the Word. Before you see what the world has to say, hear what God has to say. That one discipline, practiced consistently, reorients everything. It sets the tone for your day. It calibrates your heart. It fills you with truth before the lies have a chance to land. Put your phone down during meals and during conversations with the people in front of your face. And try to take one technology sabbatical each week. One full day where the screens go dark and the relationships go deep. You will be amazed at what happens when you stop consuming content and start being present with the people God has placed in your life.

The sin-ventory and win-ventory are diagnostic tools. Romans 12 is the prescription. Once you see the pattern, the path forward is transformation, not more information. You cannot manufacture transformation. You can only receive it. And you receive it by showing up, day after day, with your Bible open before your phone is unlocked.

Scripture before screens. It is not a rule. It is a rhythm. And rhythms shape lives. This entire week, we have looked in the mirror of technology and seen pride, envy, and lust staring back. We have seen the pig pen and the blue light and the comments section. But the mirror is not the last word. God’s Word is. The mirror of technology will keep showing you who you are. But God’s Word will show you who you are becoming.

Start the rhythm – Tomorrow morning, before you touch your phone, spend ten minutes reading Scripture. Set your Bible on top of your phone tonight as a physical reminder. Let the first voice you hear tomorrow be God’s, not the world’s.

Father, I want to be transformed, not just informed. Renew my mind. Reshape my desires. Help me choose humility over pride, contentment over envy, and self-control over lust. I commit to putting your Word first. Before my screens, before my feeds, before my notifications, let me hear from you. Thank you for the mercy that makes transformation possible. In Jesus’ name.
