Retrain Your Brain

February 4, 2024
Romans 12:2 “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
1 Corinthians 2:16 “Who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?’ But we have the mind of Christ.”

Think

Once we've experienced the transformative power of salvation, we are gifted with the mind of Christ. It's a profound reality that shapes our journey with God. As we deepen our connection with him, there's a beautiful process at play—the renewal of our minds. In science, this aligns with what's known as neuroplasticity, a concept echoing the biblical call to "renew your mind."

In our Christian walk, the Bible guides us on this transformative journey. We're encouraged to immerse ourselves in Scripture and worship, surrounding ourselves with godly advisors. It's more than a mere suggestion; it's a divine strategy for renewing our minds.

Consider the incredible capacity of the brain—this unique, God-given ability to forge new neuropathways through training and practice. It's a stark departure from the once-prevailing notion that the human brain is static and unchanging. You know the sayings: "stuck in your ways" or "you can't teach an old dog new tricks." These clichés reflected the belief that childhood trauma and development cast a concrete mold for our brains.

However, science is catching up to Scripture, unveiling a truth that aligns with our Christian understanding. As we actively pursue Jesus, immerse ourselves in his Word, and engage in prayer, we are, in essence, building new neuropathways. It's a spiritual workout for the brain—transformative and renewing.

Think of it like this: the more we practice these disciplines, the stronger these pathways become. It's like mastering a skill—the more you practice, the easier it becomes. In the realm of faith, as we consistently pursue the presence of Jesus, we are not only building a relationship with him but also forging new neuropathways, the trails that our thoughts take, the ones that control our thoughts and behaviors.

Picture this: joy, peace, hope, and acceptance become the landmarks on this renewed mind's landscape. Once governed by guilt, shame, fear, and rejection, old neuropathways become obsolete. The practice of pursuing Jesus actively reshapes our mental terrain, rendering those old, negative thoughts and feelings powerless.

So, as you commit to pursuing Jesus and nurturing relationships within the body of believers, remember this: you are not just engaging in spiritual disciplines, but actively building new neuropathways. With each intentional step, you are transforming your mind, experiencing the joyous freedom that comes with a mind renewed in Christ.
