Psalm 92:12-15 "The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the LORD, they will flourish in the courts of our God. They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, proclaiming, 'The LORD is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.'"
Think
The alarm goes off at 5:40 in the morning in the middle of July. It is still dark outside. There is not one good reason to get out of that bed, and everybody involved knows it.
But three people are already in the driveway with the car running, and one of them has been texting since 5:35. So you get up. The first mile is genuinely awful and the second one is only bad, and by the time it is over the sun is up, somebody is complaining about the pace, and two of them are arguing about where to get breakfast.
Ask any single one of those four, alone, in bed, in the dark, whether they would have run at six in the morning by themselves. Every one of them would have rolled over and gone back to sleep. Not a chance. What got them out the door was not discipline and it was not motivation. It was three people in a driveway who were already awake and were not leaving without them.
Community carries you when your feelings cannot. Everybody in that car was exactly as tired as everybody else. The ones who kept showing up all summer were not the most disciplined people in the group. They were the ones who had somebody expecting them.
That is not just a summer workout principle. It is a spiritual one, and Psalm 92 puts it in a picture you can hold on to.
The psalmist compares a person who is right with God to a palm tree and a cedar. Both are famous for surviving things. But the word doing the real work in this passage is in verse 13. Planted.
Not visiting. Not nearby. Not attending occasionally. Planted, in the house of the Lord.
A tree that gets dug up and moved every few months does not die, but it never flourishes either. It survives. It stays small. It stays fragile, because the strength of a tree is not in the part you can see. It is in a root system that took years to build in the dark, and roots only grow where a tree stays put.
You were not designed to be a spiritual tourist. Plenty of students spend years around church without ever being planted in one. They show up when it is convenient, they know the songs, they like the people, and then the first real storm hits and there is nothing underneath them to hold. Roots are not what you notice on a sunny day. Roots are what decide what happens on the day the wind comes.
Here is the other half of it, and it is worth being honest about. Your future is directly connected to your community. The people you spend the most time with are quietly setting the direction of your life right now. Not by lecturing you. By normalizing things.
Whatever your closest friends treat as normal will slowly become normal to you. How they talk about people who are not in the room. What they think is funny. What they do on a Friday night. Whether faith is something you can say out loud or something you keep to yourself. You are not choosing those things consciously. You are absorbing them.
To be clear, this is not a call to drop every friend who does not follow Jesus. Jesus did the opposite of that, constantly, and it got him in trouble with religious people. This is a question about proximity. Not who is in your life, but who has the closest seats. Who gets to speak into you. Who you become like without noticing.
Look at the promise at the end of the psalm. They will still bear fruit in old age. They will stay fresh and green. That is not a promise for a good week. That is a promise about a whole life, and it belongs to people who stayed planted long enough to grow something.
So which are you right now? Planted somewhere, or just near it?
Apply
Take a friendventory – Write down the five people you spend the most time with. Next to each name write the direction they are pulling you: toward God, away from God, or nowhere. Then pick one relationship that needs to move closer this week, and one that needs some honest distance.
Pray
God, I want to be planted, not just around. Some of the people closest to me are pulling me somewhere I would not choose if I stopped to think about it, and I do not know how to change that without losing them. Give me wisdom and give me courage. Put people in my life who make following you feel normal. In Jesus' name. Amen.
