Peace in the Middle
November 1, 2026
Read
John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
Think
Picture a classroom five minutes before a huge test. One person is flipping through notes as fast as possible. Someone else is asking everybody what was on the study guide. Another student has completely given up and is staring at the ceiling. Then there is that one person who somehow looks calm.
Same room. Same test. Completely different responses.
Peace is not always about what is happening around you. Sometimes it is about what you know in the middle of it.
In Mark 4, the disciples are panicking while Jesus is asleep. Same boat. Same storm. Same waves. But Jesus has a peace the disciples do not understand. When they wake him, Jesus gets up and speaks to the storm. The wind stops and the water becomes calm.
It is an incredible moment, but do not rush past what happened before the miracle. Jesus had peace before the storm stopped. And that is the same peace he offers you. In John 14:27, Jesus tells his followers he is leaving them his peace, a kind of peace the world cannot give.
We often want the opposite. “God, fix this situation, and then I will have peace.” “Give me the answer, and then I will stop worrying.” “Show me exactly what will happen, and then I will trust you.”
Sometimes Jesus teaches us that peace is possible before we know how everything turns out.
That does not mean you will never feel anxious, scared, or overwhelmed. It also does not mean serious anxiety or mental health struggles disappear if you pray hard enough. Those struggles are real, and talking with a parent, pastor, counselor, or another trusted adult can be an important step. Biblical peace is not pretending nothing bothers you. It is knowing fear does not get the final word.
Think about being in a car during a terrible thunderstorm. Rain hits the windshield so hard that you can barely see. If you were alone behind the wheel with no idea what you were doing, you would probably panic. But if someone you deeply trust is driving, the storm is still real but your experience of it changes.
You are not trusting the weather. You are trusting the driver.
That is the invitation Jesus gives you. You do not have to know exactly when the storm will end to know who is with you. Sometimes God calms the situation. Sometimes he gives you strength to walk through something that does not change as quickly as you want.
What would happen if, instead of waiting for everything around you to become peaceful, you started asking Jesus to build peace inside you? The waves might still be loud, but they do not have to be louder than the One who is with you.
Apply
Name the storm – Identify the one situation creating the most fear or stress in you right now. Every time you feel yourself spiraling about it today, stop and pray, “Jesus, I trust you with what I cannot control.”
Pray
Jesus, there are things in my life I cannot control, and sometimes that scares me. I want peace, but I often think I need everything to work out first. Help me trust you in uncertainty. Give me wisdom to ask for help when I need it and peace that comes from knowing you are with me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
