One Percent

John 15:4-5 "Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."

Think

Your phone is at one percent and you have four hours left in the day.

You know the routine. Brightness all the way down. Close everything. Do not open the camera. Answer nobody. You start rationing, checking the number, doing math about whether you can make it. And the phone is still a great phone. It has not gotten worse at anything. It is just running on what is left.

Then somebody hands you a charger and the entire problem disappears in about two seconds, because it was never a phone problem. It was a power problem.

Jesus says, “Apart from me you can do nothing.”

That is a hard sentence for students, because everything else in your life is telling you the opposite. Work harder. Want it more. Be disciplined. Build the habit. Grind. And a lot of that advice is good and true for a lot of things.

It is completely useless for the things we are talking about here.

Sit with this for a second, because it is where prayer actually comes from.

You cannot change your school. You can be at that school for four years and be kind and be a good friend and never once produce anything eternal in another human being by force of personality.

You cannot save your friends. You can invite, you can explain, you can answer questions, you can love them well for years. You cannot make a dead heart alive. Nobody can. That is not a limitation in you, that is a category thing.

You cannot manufacture revival. You cannot schedule it, promote it, or hype it into existence.

If that is discouraging, stay with it, because on the other side of it is one of the most freeing things in Scripture.

The pressure was never yours.

Jesus does not say, “Apart from me you can do a little less.” He says “nothing.” Which means the exhausting thing you have been doing, where you carry the spiritual condition of your friends around like it is on you, was never the assignment.

Look at the word he uses instead. Remain. Stay. Do not go anywhere. A branch does not strain to produce grapes. A branch stays attached, and fruit shows up on it, and the branch could not tell you exactly when it started happening.

That is what prayer is. Prayer is staying attached.

Prayer is the branch admitting it is a branch.

Every time you pray, you are saying out loud that you are not the vine. That you are not the source. That the life running through you came from somewhere else.

And notice the promise in verse 5. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit. Not might. Will. He is not asking you to produce anything. He is asking you to stay close to the one who does.

So the honest prayer today is not a strategy. It is five words.

“God, I cannot do this.”

Say it about your school. Say it about the friend you have been carrying. Say it about the thing in your own life you have been trying to fix by willpower since June.

Then stop rationing and take the charger.

Apply

Admit you cannot – Name out loud to God one thing you have been trying to accomplish in your own strength. Tell him plainly that you cannot do it and ask him to do it, then leave it with him instead of picking it back up in ten minutes.

Pray

Jesus, you are the vine and I am not. I have been trying to carry things that were never mine to carry and I am running on almost nothing. I cannot change my school, I cannot save my friends, and I cannot fix myself. I am staying attached to you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
