Think
Have you ever found yourself frustrated when dealing with your strong-willed child, feeling like your instructions – whether it's using stickers, encouraging words, or even disciplinary measures – are falling on deaf ears? Perhaps you've reached the point where you're tempted to yank that sticker chart off the fridge and call it quits! But here's a word of encouragement for all the moms and dads out there: don't give up.
Consistency is the key. It's not just about having a plan; it's about sticking to that plan. Charts and reward systems are effective, but only when the rewards or consequences are consistently applied over time. According to research conducted by the U.K. Health Behavior Research Center in London, it takes an impressive 66 days of consistent practice for a behavior to become a habit. That's a lot of stickers on that chart! It's a testament to the fact that a child's brain needs time to rewire itself to adopt new behaviors. But remember, it is achievable with our partnership with the One who made them. We can do this!
You were chosen by God to be their parent, and with patience and persistence, you can guide them on the path toward their God-given purpose and calling. Don’t give up!
Apply
Take a moment to evaluate your consistency. Is there an area when you are giving your child mixed messages? Do a re-set and re-establish expectations in your family.
Pray
Heavenly Father, you gave me these amazingly gifted and wonderfully creative children. Help me to steward them well. Give me the wisdom and discernment to shepherd them and mold them to love and serve you. Give me strength when I want to quit. In Jesus' name. Amen.
