Not About Me

Hebrews 13:16 “And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”

Arlington National Cemetery, nestled in Arlington County, Virginia, is a profound symbol of American sacrifice and service and a poignant historical landmark. This sprawling 624-acre site serves as the final resting place for over 400,000 active-duty service members, veterans, and their families. Alongside these military heroes lie the graves of a select number of presidents, astronauts, senators, and Supreme Court justices. The cemetery’s diverse roster of notables marks it as a place of honor and remembrance for many of America’s most revered figures.

The cemetery was founded during the somber days of the Civil War as a practical solution to the growing number of casualties. The federal government needed a dignified place to lay its soldiers to rest, and Arlington’s proximity to Washington, D.C. made it a fitting choice. Today, it holds the remains of military personnel from every American conflict—from the Revolutionary War to modern-day operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. This rich tapestry of history serves as a somber reminder of the deep sacrifices made by those in uniform.

But sacrifice isn’t always about dramatic, final acts of heroism. It’s often found in the everyday choices we make to set aside our own comfort for the good of others. This is precisely what Jesus calls us to do—follow his example and prioritize the needs of others above our own. It’s about giving of ourselves—our attention, care, love, time, and help—to make a positive impact on those around us.

Embracing these values of service and selflessness is one of the ways we can truly honor Jesus. By living a life marked by unselfishness and sacrifice, we reflect his teachings and love. This commitment to putting others first allows us to continue to show people what the gospel is truly about.

Apply

Ask yourself today how you can be like Jesus and give off yourself. Small acts of kindness show others you are different; they create moments of grace. They affect the people around you.

Pray

Jesus, thank you for your sacrifice and the sacrifice of others. Help me see beyond myself and my needs. Teach me to act kindly, speak with love, and serve without seeking something in return. Give me the courage to put the needs of others first. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
