Keep in Touch

James 1:13-14 “When tempted, no one should say, ‘God is tempting me.’ For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.”

James’s advice on tackling temptation is like a survival guide. He points us to recognize where it stems from. God tests us, but he doesn’t dangle sin in front of us; that’s Satan’s ploy. We become more vigilant and less likely to succumb to sin’s allure when we grasp this truth.

Understanding the weight behind temptation is crucial, too. It’s not just a passing feeling; it carries the potential for ruin. As believers, we’re anchored, not in shifting emotions, but in unwavering faith—keeping our focus fixed on Jesus and rooted in God’s Word. While emotions toss us around, the Bible keeps us grounded.

Temptation isn’t stagnant; it’s a slippery slope. It lures with false promises, always overhyping and underdelivering. It never comes with a warning label saying, “This will destroy you.” It’s appealing, deceptive, and hides its true intentions behind a facade of allure.

A known quote: “Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.”

Apply

Think of an area where you face temptation. What is one step back you need to take from temptation to keep you from sliding down the slippery slope?

Train your mind and actions to align with God’s principles, learning to say “No!” to temptations that do not align with his will (Galatians 5:22-23).

Pray

God, give me the wisdom to discern right and wrong and the courage to choose your path even when faced with temptation. Give me self-discipline and self-control to turn away from paths that differ from your path for my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
