Joy All the Way Full

John 15:11 “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.”

Picture a cup being filled with your favorite drink. It fills up higher and higher until it reaches the very top, right to the brim, so full it could not hold one more drop. That is the picture of the word “complete” in today’s verse. All the way full.

This is the last thing Jesus says at the end of the whole vine picture, and it might be the most surprising. After talking about vines and branches and pruning and staying connected, he tells us why he said all of it. “So that my joy may be in you,” he says, “and that your joy may be complete.”

Did you catch that? The whole point of staying connected to Jesus is joy. Not a boring life. Not a life of just following rules. A life that is full, all the way to the top, with the same joy that Jesus himself has.

Sometimes kids think being close to God means missing out on fun. But Jesus says the opposite. He says being connected to him is where the deepest, fullest joy actually comes from. The branches on the vine are not sad branches. They are the ones bursting with life.

Here is the bridge to your life. Real joy is not the same as being happy for a minute because you got a treat. Real joy is a deep-down gladness that stays even on hard days, because you know you belong to Jesus and he loves you. That is the joy he wants to fill you up with.

So remember this as the week wraps up. Jesus did not tell us about the vine to give us a chore. He told us so our joy could be complete, filled right up to the brim. Staying close to him is the fullest life there is.

Fill up on joy – Today, name three things about knowing Jesus that make you glad. Say them out loud to God as a thank-you. Let him fill your cup up to the top.

Pray

Jesus, thank you that staying close to you is where real joy comes from. Fill my cup all the way to the top with your joy. Help me remember that the fullest life is a life connected to you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
