Read: John 6
John 6:16-20 “When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were frightened. But he said to them, ‘It is I; don’t be afraid.’”

The Sea of Galilee, though small, was notorious for sudden, violent storms due to its unique geographical features, including steep hills that cause rapid temperature changes and fierce winds. These storms caught the disciples off guard twice, both times at night (Matthew 8; John 6). They battled fierce winds and waves for hours, making little progress. During the second storm, Jesus was praying alone on a mountain. Seeing their struggle at dawn, he walked on the water to rescue them, bringing calm to the storm and relief to the weary disciples.
These storms symbolize the trials of faith we all face. The literal storm was followed by a spiritual one, as the disciples encountered rejection and unpopularity on land. These back-to-back challenges became a powerful emblem for the disciples, representing all the trials believers must endure. Like the disciples, we will find ourselves in darkness, feeling Jesus' absence, and struggling to make progress. Yet, enduring the storm and holding on is a significant achievement. As George Mueller said, “To learn strong faith is to endure great trials. I have learned my faith by standing firm amid severe testings.”
In the middle of the Sea of Galilee, the disciples struggled against vicious winds and darkness, feeling lost and overwhelmed. This scene mirrors our own lives when we face relentless challenges and confusion, making it hard to see the way forward. Yet, just as the disciples were in the perfect position for the Savior’s intervention, our moments of struggle are perfect opportunities to cry out for Jesus. The sudden and violent nature of these storms highlight the unpredictable challenges we face in life, reinforcing our need to depend on God’s intervention.
The disciples' experience on the Sea of Galilee prepared them for future challenges, teaching them to trust in Jesus' care even when he wasn't physically present. Their initial terror at seeing Jesus walk on water mirrored their later fear when he rose from the dead. Both instances taught them to recognize his presence and trust in his deliverance. We are reminded that with faith we can endure life's storms, trusting that Jesus will always come to our aid. Just as the disciples found relief and strength in Jesus during their darkest moments, so can we find hope and courage in his presence amidst our own trials.
