God’s Own Breath

Try something for a second. Hold your hand right in front of your mouth and breathe out slowly. Feel that warm air on your skin? That is your breath. It comes from deep inside you. It is a part of you that goes out into the world.

The Bible uses that exact picture to describe itself. It says all Scripture, which is another word for the Bible, is God-breathed. Think about that. The words in the Bible came out of God the way your breath comes out of you. They carry something of him in them.

That is what makes the Bible different from every other book in the whole world. Other books are full of good ideas that people came up with. The Bible is different. God breathed it out. People wrote the words down, but the words came from him.

Here is the bridge to your life. If the Bible is God-breathed, then reading it is one of the closest ways you can get to God. It is almost like sitting close enough to feel his breath. When you read it, you are not just learning facts. You are getting close to the God who spoke it.

The verse also says the Bible is useful. It teaches us what is true. It helps us see when we are heading the wrong way and turns us back around. It trains us to live the way God made us to live. That is a lot of good stuff packed into one book. No other book on your shelf can do all of that.

So the next time you open the Bible, remember what it really is. It is not just words on a page. It is God-breathed, alive and powerful, and it is meant for you. The same God who breathed out the stars breathed out these words so you could know him. That makes even a few minutes of reading something special.

Open it like a gift – The next time you open a Bible, pause first and say, “God, these are your words, breathed out by you. Speak to me.” Then read even a few verses slowly.

God, thank you that the Bible is your own words, breathed out by you. Help me treasure it. When I read it, draw me close to you and teach me what is true. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
