Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash. Matthew 7:24-27
Do you remember the children’s story of the Three Little Pigs? Here’s a quick refresher. There were three little pigs. They each had to gather the supplies to build a house. The first pig built his out of straw. It was quick, easy, and the most cost-effective. The second pig built his out of sticks. It took a little longer to put together, and it was a little more expensive, but he was able to get it done quickly. The third little pig built his out of brick. It cost the most money, but it was also the strongest. When the big bad wolf came around, he blew over the houses made of straw and sticks. The house that was made from bricks stood standing. The pig who built his house out of bricks built his house with a firm foundation.
Just as you read in the verse above of the two men who built their homes, the first two pigs were like the foolish man who built his house on the ground without a firm foundation. When the winds came, their houses fell flat. The third pig is like the wise man; he built his home on a firm foundation. It may have taken more time, money, and energy, but it stood firm when the strong winds came.
We need to build our lives on a firm foundation. If we build our lives on the world, money, and other people, our foundation will fail when trials inevitably blow our way. If we build our lives on God and His Word, we will have a firm foundation that cannot be shaken. He will shelter us from the storm because a foundation built on Him is firm.
Think of ways you could build a firm foundation, such as starting your day in His Word, listening to worship music while you get ready, and serving at church.
Dear God, thank you that you will always be with us. Help me build my life on a firm foundation in You so that when the storm comes, You will make me stand strong and never be shaken.
