Genesis 16:13 “You are the God who sees me.”

Think

Few things test faithfulness like feeling invisible. You’re doing the right thing, staying steady, showing up—but it seems like no one notices. No one says “thank you.” No one affirms your effort. It can leave you wondering, “Does this even matter? Am I wasting my time? Has God forgotten me too?”

Genesis 16 tells the story of Hagar, a servant girl used, dismissed, and sent away. She wasn’t part of the plan—just a piece in someone else’s solution. And when things went wrong, she was the one cast aside. Alone in the wilderness, carrying pain and confusion, she encountered God. And not just any name for God—but a personal one: El Roi, which means “you are the God who sees me.”

That moment changed everything. Not because her situation instantly improved, but because she realized she wasn’t alone. She wasn’t forgotten. She wasn’t invisible to the One who mattered most. That’s the kind of faithfulness God calls us to. Not the kind that’s fueled by recognition, but the kind that trusts that he sees. Even when no one else does.

We often measure success by visibility. If something’s seen, liked, or shared, it counts. But Scripture teaches that God values the hidden. He sees what’s done in secret. He rewards what’s born in faith. He honors what’s carried with quiet consistency.

When you feel overlooked, it’s easy to retreat. To pull back your effort. To stop investing your heart. You might still show up outwardly, but internally, you begin to check out. It’s a subtle form of self-protection. If no one sees, then why care? But faithfulness isn’t about being seen by people. It’s about staying true to the One who always sees. When your life is rooted in his gaze, you can keep showing up—even in obscurity. You can keep offering your best—even when it goes unrecognized. You can keep loving, giving, serving, praying—even when the room is empty and the inbox is silent.

That kind of faithfulness is sacred. It’s where trust is tested and strengthened. It’s where God forges depth that platform can’t produce. It’s where motives are purified. It’s where you begin to want him more than you want applause. Jesus understood this. Before his public ministry, he lived three decades in hiddenness. No stage. No spotlight. Just faithfulness. After he healed crowds, he often withdrew alone. When he performed miracles, he sometimes told people not to tell anyone. His life wasn’t about being noticed—it was about being aligned.

If you’re feeling forgotten today—by friends, by family, by coworkers, even those closest to you, hear this clearly: you are not forgotten by God. He sees the way you keep showing up for that child, that spouse, that coworker, that neighbor. He sees the obedience you’ve walked in when it would’ve been easier to quit. He sees the private tears, the unseen generosity, the quiet courage. And he is not ignoring you. He is forming something in you. A life of deep faith. A soul that’s steady. A trust that doesn’t sway based on affirmation.

God may not always change your circumstances immediately. But he always meets you in them. And when you know that El Roi is near—when you believe he sees and values your faithfulness—you find new strength to keep going. Because the reward isn’t recognition. The reward is relationship. He’s with you. And that’s enough.

Apply

Think of one area in your life where you feel unseen or unappreciated. Pause today and speak this aloud: God, you see me here.” Then recommit that area to him. Let your faithfulness be fueled not by external affirmation, but by the truth that his eyes are always on you.

Pray

God, you are the One who sees me. When I feel overlooked or unappreciated, remind me that your presence is constant. Help me stay faithful, even when no one notices. Anchor my heart in your gaze. Let your nearness be enough, and grow in me a faith that endures without applause. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
