Matthew 6:11 "Give us today our daily bread."

Think

Think about your favorite breakfast. Maybe it is a warm stack of pancakes, or cereal that crunches just right, or eggs with cheese melted on top. Now imagine trying to fill up on breakfast one time and never eating again. That would be silly, right? Your tummy would be growling by lunchtime. Your body needs food every single day.

When Jesus taught his friends how to pray, he told them to ask God for their daily bread. Not their once-a-year bread. Not their giant pile of bread to store up forever. Their daily bread. The food they needed for that one day.

Here is the bridge for this whole week. The way your body needs food every day, your heart needs God every day. And one of the main ways God feeds our hearts is through the Bible. The Bible is like food for the inside of you.

That is why reading the Bible works best as a daily thing, not a once-in-a-while thing. You would not eat one huge meal on Monday and expect to be full all week. In the same way, a little bit of the Bible every day keeps your heart strong and close to God.

And notice the word give. Jesus says to ask God to give us our bread. That means God is the one who provides. When you open the Bible, you are not doing God a favor. He is doing you a favor. He is feeding you. It is like sitting down at a table where someone who loves you has already made your favorite meal. You just come and eat.

So this week, as we learn how to read the Bible, start with this simple idea. God wants to feed you, a little at a time, day by day. You do not have to be super smart or grown up to be fed. You just have to show up. All you have to do is come to the table hungry.

Apply

Come to the table – Before you eat one of your meals today, thank God for two things: the food on your plate, and the Bible that feeds your heart. Ask him to feed you both ways today.

Pray

God, thank you for giving me what I need every single day, both food for my body and your words for my heart. Help me come to you hungry and let you feed me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
