A Sword
December 12, 2022
Read:
Luke 2:33-35, "The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: 'This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.'"
Think:
Simeon, an elderly man, was present when Jesus was brought to the Temple to be circumcised. He was actually waiting for Him and He recognized the true identity of the Savior. This white-haired fellow saw in this baby, salvation for all, but also anguish to come. It is understandable why there aren't any songs with this last statement “a sword will pierce your soul.” It isn’t sweet and light – not “Christmasy.” But it is true.
Mary would one day stand near the cross and watch her son die a horrible death. She discovered, for those who trust in Him, that He often uses soul-piercing events to unleash more grace, more mercy, more joy into the world.
Sometimes when we experience our deepest pain, when our soul seems pierced, that is the moment God is using to bring joy to the world. We may see it all as just pain, but later we can find our deepest hurts often become passages of profound grace for us and for others.
Act:
Don’t shrink from the sword. Today follow Him.
Pray:
God, today it isn’t about me. Help me make it about You. Show me others who are in pain around me and give me an opportunity to share my story and Your grace with them! Amen.
